Since May 2021, Blackleaf has planted a tree for every order placed on our site!
We’re doing this to promote biodiversity and ecosystem health, as well as sequester carbon dioxide through nature-based solutions. Since the start of May we have unofficially captured 35 tonnes of carbon dioxide, based off of the year one carbon sequestration rate – the aim here is to account for the carbon we release into the atmosphere.
Our trees are being planted in Kenya in collaboration with our Partners Eden Reforestation Projects, a US poverty alleviation non-profit, which helps rejuvenate and rewild marginalised areas around the world.
What makes Eden stand out is that they only plant native species of trees and mangroves, which promotes biodiversity and soil health a lot more than plant monocultures. Monocultures are often favoured when companies generate carbon credits, since certain species can capture CO2 more quickly than a more holistic arrangement of plant species – the problem here is that this is often short-term profit driven without much consideration for the broader environment.
Not another tree-planting initiative
Whilst this is fantastic news and we’re certain you (our customers) will appreciate it, it’s not just another tree-planting initiative… What we’re really, really proud of is that we’ve been accepted into the world’s most elite emissions reductions club. We have set our Science Based Targets as part of Internet Fusion Group, in line with 1.5C of warming, meaning that we are members of Business Ambition for 1.5C!
Science Based Targets initiative
Don’t worry if you don’t understand what this means – we’re here to update you. Net zero greenhouse gas emissions is what every business and country is striving for, no later than 2050, but in the meantime we must reduce our emissions by 50% by 2030 if we are to limit warming to 1.5C. 1.5C is set as the lowest emissions warming scenario before the impacts of climate change reach a tipping point and we see catastrophic runaway warming – it is therefore vital that we push for 1.5C warming. What makes the Science Based Targets initiative stand out is that it is based on real climate science and warming scenarios, as set out by the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change).
Not only are we one of the 23 ‘retailing’ category companies in the world registered under Business Ambition for 1.5C, but we have reduced our direct scope 1 and 2 emissions (direct operations and electricity) by 93.5% since 2018 – meaning we are already ahead of the game!
As a result of our carbon reduction work and a tree per order, every Blackleaf order on average will sequester 3.8 times more CO2 than we emit (scopes 1,2 and 3 ; scope 3 doesn’t include product). Our average order contains 3.3 kgCO2e and each tree planted will capture 12.3 kgCO2e in year one. Go figure…
If you are a climate conscious customer, rest assured that we are doing our bit to decouple our own operations from carbon emissions – and we’ll plant a tree with every order if that isn’t enough! Whilst investment in nature-based solutions is awesome for carbon mitigation and more holistic environmental benefits, keep an eye on our page for exciting emissions reduction initiatives launching very soon…
